OSHA requires that employers train all workers who operate or work with aerial lifts, including scissor lifts, to ensure their safety. Training includes the following topics: 

  • Hazards: Explain electrical, fall, struck-by, and falling object hazards 
  • Procedures: Provide procedures for dealing with hazards 
  • Unsafe conditions: Teach how to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions in the work setting 
  • Operation: Provide instructions for correct operation of the lift, including maximum intended load and load capacity 
  • Demonstrations: Demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to operate the lift before operating it on the job 
  • Inspections: Explain when and how to perform inspections, including pre- and post-use inspections 
  • Manufacturer's requirements: Provide manufacturer's requirements and safety guidelines
